Default Tips for Newcomers

Settings and Configuration Tips.

1.) If you are running XPs2: Download and install the lvllord patch from here
http://www.lvllord.de/?lang=en&url=downloads. Set half open connections to 250-300. Windows will advise you not to do this, ignore it. Your antivirus may not permit you to download it, suspend
your anti-virus until you have it installed. It may erroneously be identified as spyware, just igonre. This can easily be returned to its' former state.

2.) To optimize your TCP/IP stacks go herehttp://www.speedguide.net/tcpoptimizer.php . Download, install and run. Simply click optimize. Later on once you are more sure of its' purpose
you can tweak it better to suit your set-up. This can easily be returned to its' former state.

3.) Bugs sometimes prevent one version or another from operating on some systems or setups.Try using a different version. You can download a differnt version here. http://www.http-tunnel.com/html/solu...el/client2.asp . Do a clean uninstall ( see 5 )

4.) Occassionally a server may be down. If the tunnel client does not connect or your experience latency while browsing try rotating to another sever. This is accomplished by: With main window of the tunnel client open click on Configure another window appears Click on Test. This should connect you to another server. You can view the new connection in the Log window.

5.) Sometimes you may need to uninstall the client. This may be due to a corrupt install. A clean
re-install works best most times. Make sure you have a copy of your key before doing this. Uninstall the client. Then go to Start in the lower left, Right click on explore and locate where
you installed Http-Tunnel,( most times this will be in program files ) and delete it.Next click on Start>Run and type in regedit and Click enter. You should be in the Registery. In XP the entries for Http-Tunnel can be found at: HKEY_CURRENT_USER>Software>HttpTunnelClient. Delete the entries for HttpTunnel. Be careful don't delete anything else. Then run a registery cleaner, reboot and reinstall.

6.) Sometimes you may be asked to test your speed with and without the tunnel and post screen shots. Go here for the speed test and choose the Washington D.C. server. http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ and you can go to www.photobucket.com and link to your screen shots if you know how. Real easy to insert into forums after you rote through it for a moment.

7.) Sometimes you may need to suspend your antivus or other security applications. Occassionaly just exiting the program or terminating it even with Task Manager is not enough. You may need to take it out to the start up menu. 1.) If you have a Windows independent start up manager disable you security software until you have the client running properly and later on you can enable your security software. When you re-enable your security software do it 1 by 1 that way you will know if there is a conflict with a particular application. 2.) If you don't have your own start up manager then use the one Windows Provides. Go to Start in the lower left Click on it then locate Run Click on that. In the dialogue box type in MSCONFIG. The system configuration utility window appears. Select the Start up tab. Here you can disable your security software from starting up on next bootup. Later you can re-enable. Best is to do it 1 by 1. That way if there is a conflict with a certain application it will be easier to isolate. Also removing unnecessary start up programs can save resources. If you are not sure of something leave it alone. Just reseach it. Programs have a way of hiding themselves from the parent applicantion. You may see TKBELL and say well I don't know what that is so I will leave it. A little research reveals it to be a Realplayer file and updater.

8.) A small tweak that helps on some games and interfaces is to lower your color resolution from 32 bit to 16 bit. To do this: Go to control panel>Display>Click on the settings tab and locate the col

Default more tips

9.) This is basic and standard configuration

1).Q.How do I configure my programs to use Http-Tunnel
A).From your application's menu, find the Settings (or Preferences) dialog, look under \"Network\" or\"Proxy\" \"LAN\" or a similar setting, and configure as follows:
Proxy Type: HTTP or SOCKS (4 or 5) 5 is best in most cases
Proxy Address localhost or 127.0.0.1, 127.0.0.1 is best in most cases
Proxy Port 1080 ( When the tunnel client is open in the configure mode, at the bottom you see that Http-Tunnel's default listening Port is 1080 this can be change to 1081 etc. if another application is currently using that Port. Just make sure that any programs you are using with the tunnel client use the same port.)
Authentication not required
Proxy Username leave blank
Proxy Password leave blank

2).Q.What can I do if an application is not natively configurable?
A.)You need a 'Socksifying Agent'. There are 2 excellent freeware programs. One is SocksCap and the other is Freecap. These add SOCKS support to almost any application. Both come
with exhaustive help files on how to configure applications correctly.
You can find guides to configure the SOCKS programs at this link.
http://www.http-tunnel.com/html/support/user_guides.asp

10.) As always you must do a thorough computer cleaning. Run your anti-virus, and spyware detectors. Defrag. Get a registery cleaner.

11.) If you are getting remote server rejections it may be that either the socks or the http element of the server is having problems. If your program is natively configurable to these settings then switching to the other may be an interim fix until admin can be alerted and correct the problem. If you are using an application like SOCKSCap to launch your program it is always configured as socks then this option would not be available to you.

12.) This is for users who are able to use their client with http tunnel for sometime, getting some data transfer but it stops after sometime giving errors like :
\"remote server rejected connection\" and
\"Incoming Connection received at SOCKS/HTTPS/HTTP frontend\" but nothing happens
Also users who get the above errors without any previous data transfer can refer to this

a)Try to disable your antivirus or shut it down and then run http tunnel client.Sometimes the antivirus keeps scanning whatever is downloaded and it can complicate things. If you get better results, then try to disable this scanning without disabling your antivirus.

b)Give permissions in your firewall to http tunnel client and port 1080 or whatever port is being used by the http tunnel client.Sometimes the firewall keeps scanning on the port 1080 and this may slow down the connections.

c)Even though you may have given permissions as said above, the firewall still may try to scan.Try to disable your Firewall or shut it down and then run http tunnel client. If you get better results then this is the issue why you are not getting good speeds.

d)Many times the windows firewall might prevent you.Follow the steps 2 and 3 for windows firewall also and see.

Known firewalls and antivirus that cause this issue are Norton and ZoneAlarm.
If you need help with configuration on your antivirus or firewall, post here.It may take sometime but i will guide you on the configuration

Thanks to coco70 for his valuable input

13.) This link is to a free tool: http://download.visualware.com/pub/myspeed/msc.exe It will let you test from your computer your download/upload speeds with/without the tunnel, through SOCKS or HTTP. It is natively configurable to use the tunnel client. You can also do a visual trace route to see where, if any, bottle necks may be occuring or if your through-put is being throttled, etc. Please take a few minutes to famiiarize yourself with its' interface. Such as choosing the server nearest to you.

How to optimize virtual memory (swap file) in Windows

Windows operating system is using part of your hard drive as a virtual memory. When Windows runs out of physical memory it starts to swap out data to virtual memory, which is a file on hard disk (pagefile.sys). Hard disk is much slower than physical memory, so when Windows starts using virtual memory everything slows down. Remember those moments when Windows stops responding and hard disk light is always on…

One solution is to add more physical memory; another is to optimize virtual memory.

Optimizing virtual memory

1. Right click on “My Computer” icon and select “Properties”

2. In “System Properties” select “Advanced” tab and click Performance “Settings” button

3. In “Performance Options” select “Advanced” tab and click Virtual Memory “Change” button

4. “Virtual Memory” settings dialog will appear

By default virtual memory is located on drive where Windows operating system is installed. If you have more than one partition or disk, you can enable virtual memory on each one independently.

Possible settings are:

Custom - you specify manually minimum and maximum paging file size

System managed size - system determines best size depending on memory requirements

No paging file - paging file is disabled*

Best paging file size is three times amount of physical memory (e.g. if you have 512 MB ram, paging file should be 1536 MB), and you should make it fixed size. You can do that by selecting “Custom size” and entering for both minimum and maximum the same size (3 x ram) and click “Set” button.

If minimum and maximum is different size or “System managed size” is selected, paging file can shrink and grow. This is a bad thing, because paging file will become fragmented. More the paging file is fragmented, system will access it slower.

Defragmenting the paging file

If you have defragmentation application like Norton Utilities or Diskkeeper you can use it to defragment paging file. Disk Defragmenter that is included with windows cannot defragment paging file.

You can defragment paging file even if you don’t have necessary application. First, you *disable paging file or move it to another partition or disk. Then defragment disk (how do I do that) where paging file used to be. After defragmentation is finished, reenable paging file on that defragmented disk.

To summarize:

- Best paging file size is fixed size three times amount of ram (”Custom size” option with same minimum and maximum)

- If you have two physical hard disks put paging file on the one that does not have Windows installed on it

- Defragment your paging file
