1) uTorrent 1.8.3 (build 15772)

2) Firewall-only setup

3) No.

4) No.

5) Download speed: 5837 kbps. Upload speed: 2837 kbps.

6) No seeders or leechers available- no kind of connection possible.

7) Used both SOCKS4 and SOCKS5, no difference.

8) http://inferno.demonoid.com:3412/announce

9) HTTP Tunnel v4.4

10) No connections possible.

My university operates a strict no-P2P policy, so I've been using anonymisers and scramblers to download, but each of them's stopped working shortly afterwards. Then HTTP Tunnel worked, (paid version) but has also stopped working. Seems likely the sysadmins are finding a way to close the ports or control the traffic. My logs mostly read "Remote server rejected connection", which I'm guessing is the external network firewall. Any ideas? The problem seems to be the same as many of the other posts I've seen.

Yes it is a working address. I have received nothing regarding this post.

For utorrent. This is what I would suggest. This is a procedure I use, say, if utorrent becomes corrupted somehow.

Goto: http://www.oldversion.com/ and get utorrent. v1.6 > http://www.oldversion.com/download_uTorrent_1.6.html

Set it up according to the guide Here: http://www.http-tunnel.com/files/uTorrent.pdf

After I have things downloading well. I can then use the automatic update, download and install of utorrent. This keeps all my settings in place and doesn't even interfere with my downloading of a torrent while doing so.

I like the newer version because I can control up and download speeds. But I always set it up this way.

Default Client Crashes/Proxy Requests

Thanks for the tips- got it working shortly afterwards and forgot to post. Now I have an entirely different problem- apologies if it belongs in the "Client Support" section. If left overnight or for periods of more than a few hours, my HTTP Tunnel client seems to crash, meaning that uTorrent bombards my sysadmin's cache with requests for the proxy the whole night. This has led to my enforced disconnection by the administration, so are there any steps I could take to stop the client crashing, or failing that, arranging for uTorrent to exit instantly if it loses proxy connection? If it happens again I have been told my Net access will be permanently disconnected. Thanks in advance.

See if this link has any useful info:

You may also want to look into an app called: AlwaysUp. I have it. It does what it says.

Default uTorrent

Just a quick question, as I continue to try to educate myself with this whole thing If I turn on HTTP-Tunnel first, then I turn on uTorrent and it starts to connect to seeds/peers, whether through Socks or HTTP, and then I turn off/shut down HTTP-Tunnel, will I remain connected to the existing seeds/peers through the mediator server even though the tunnel app is turned off, or would I be immediately disconnected from the seeds/peers.

Reason I ask is because I've tried this, while I've been playing around with the app, and I was surprised that my connections and download speed remain unchanged, even when the app has been turned off. Just wondering if this is normal?

The tunnel client makes it possible to connect to the sharing network and trackers. There after the P2P app may try to find other resources ( open ports )

P2P apps are aggressive and may attempt to circumvent ( seeking open ports ) any restrictions you try to put on those. Using the : Use Proxy for Peer to Peers Connections ( an option in utorrent ) tend to tame this aggressiveness and there would be fewer errant ( leakage ) connections. It may just take a little longer to complete a download.

An Option that I use to help avoid leakage connections.

I use a Socksifying Agent such as Proxifier and set it to Proxify All - remember to exclude the tunnel client. This helps prevent leakage connections. But do not configure the P2P application to use the tunnel client. Leave the configuration of the P2P app open as if you did not need to use the tunnel client.

Proxifier then becomes the aggressive application. You should notice an immediate difference in the amount of connections you see going through the tunnel client.

Default HTTP proxy

William - I mentioned earlier that I noticed that my connections to seeds/peers continued without any change, even when I turned off HTTP-Tunnel. After playing around with it for a while, I realized that this only happens when I have the proxy server set to "HTTP" in uTorrent preferences. If I have it set to Socks4 or Socks5, when I turn off HTTP-Tunnel, my connections to seeds/peers are immediately dropped. I also noticed that the option to "Use proxy server for peer-to-peer connections" is greyed out when I select HTTP as the proxy server type in uTorrent preferences. It seems as though I might not be using the tunnel when I select HTTP as the proxy server type? Is that possible; if so is there anything special that you need to do to set the server type as HTTP?

- scott

HTTP uses the SQUID for cached connections.

SOCKS does not use the SQUID and DNS is resolved locally.

This may be the cause. HTTP is using the SQUID and is caching your connections.

Where SOCKS may continually need to make new ones.

You may need to take this topic to a P2P forum for further investigation.

I am not familar with the coding structure or inherent behavior for proxy connections of any particular P2P client.

My Providence is to get Users and Applications to connect to and through the servers.

However; as I have mentioned both in the forums and email to you. I use Proxifier to Proxify All. This prevents any leakage connections. All connections must go through Proxifier and then the tunnel client.
